First Big Holiday

Posted by cassie on Thursday, 30 November, 2006 @ 3:33 pm

Well we weathered our first major holiday with baby in tow. And boy was it a major one! Since both of our parents live in the area we normally go to both houses for the holidays, although my mom is a bit more lax and will sway the day one way or the other to make my life easier. (thanks mom!!) This year my grandma had to toss a wrench in those plans though by wanting to host her own Thanksgiving dinner on Friday when we normally got to my parents. So! We had brunch at my parents, dinner at Nick’s and then dinner again at grandma’s the next day. Good thing we like turkey ;)

I was a bit nervous on how all the activity would sit with Anthony, but thankfully he did really well. I brought his activity gym and some toys to amuse him but he mostly was passed from person to person.

If you live in the Tampa Bay area be sure to check out the following site - http://fancypantssale.com/index.html. They are having a consignment sale this week on clothing, nursery items, strollers, etc.

Apparently they also have one in the Spring that I plan on trying to attend.

Must Have Baby Gear

Here are the top “must have” baby items that I have found so far. Feel free to add ones you haven’t been able to live without.

  1. Infantino Baby Carrier x2 (one stays in the car for when we go places)
  2. Infant Car Seat Travel System. It’s awesome how it snaps in and out of the base for the car and right into the stroller
  3. A vibrating bouncy seat
  4. Walker. He’s already sitting in it, we just put a rolled-up towel in front of him so he can’t flip forward and bang his head on the tray. We push him around the house in it and make zooming noises, which he seems to enjoy.
  5. Fisher Price Soothing Dreams Baby Monitor with remote. A friend recommended this to me and it is awesome! Unfortunately it has been discontinued but you can find it on eBay. It has a remote on the walkie-talkie portion that will activate a ceiling slide show and plays either lullabys or nature sounds. You can even hit the talk button on the handheld to talk to the baby without going into their room. It took about a week for Anthony to get the hang of the slideshow before he really started liking it. Now he lays on his bed and stares at the ceiling and complains when it shuts off. lol
  6. Tanktops with built-in bras. I am breastfeeding and it makes it super easy for both of us to navigate. I tend to wear them when I leave the house since there isn’t a lot of complicated buttons or pulling your shirt half-way up your body to feed them. They also work well if you have to feed them while they are in the infant carrier. I know there are nursing shirts but I haven’t looked very hard for them since this works so well.

Gear I’m working on:

  1. Einstein Baby DVDs. Every mom I know swears by these.
  2. Diaper Champ. Unlike the Diaper Genie it can use any type of bags so you don’t have to spend money to literally throw it away.
  3. Twilight Turtle Nighlight. It imitates the night sky by casting stars on the ceiling and since Anthony likes his monitor so much I thought this might be cool to try also.
  4. Window shades for the car. You would not believe how hard it is to find ones that have good recommendations and are actually in stock in a store!
  5. DVD player for the car. The one that I found doesn’t have batteries (good in FL heat) and plugs into the cigarette lighter. It hooks around the headrest on the seat so you don’t have to replace the entire headrest. My GF says her son loves riding in the car and watching his Baby E movies.
  6. Grocery cart cover since you never know who and what touched it last ;)
  7. An excerise ball. My poor little boy has horrible problems with gas and I’ve been told that this works wonders for gassy babies. Apparently you can either hold them and bounce up and down on it OR put them on their tummies and roll them on it to help expel whatever.

So what works for you and your little ones?
