Study: “Are We Raising Egomaniacs?”

Posted by: cassie  /  Category: News, Ramblings

This is interesting simply because Nick and I have had this discussion many times. We don’t want Anthony growing up thinking that he is  “too big for his britches”. I think we are seeing an increasing backlash against the child-running-the-show movement that has taken place in America over the past 20 years.

I grew up and received my fair share of spankings, groundings and praise. It seems as though now we are all so worried about effecting the psyche of our kids that we don’t discipline or  do anything other than tell them they are special. Yea, our kids are special – to us – but not to the millions of others they will interact with in their lifetime. I think it’s hightime that we start being realistic again and showing them the world is NOT theirs on a platter and they will have to GASP! work for what they want.

Stephen Scheck never liked the way some parents lavish praise on their kids in public, so he didn’t do it with his two children, now freshmen in high school and college.

“My wife and I pretty early on started to notice this whole thing happening at Brownies, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, 4-H meetings or wherever that many parents seemed very invested in their children always being the star, always having a great time, always feeling successful,” says Scheck, a college dean in Monmouth, Ore.

Choose Your Next Baby’s Sex

Posted by: cassie  /  Category: Medical

I saw this chart ages ago long before I became pregnant but if you really want to pick the sex of your upcoming child why not give this a shot. I mean I’ve heard of people standing on their head to guarantee the sex, as well as having sex in the hot tub, so what do you have to lose?

Over a thousand years, ancient chinese couples have turned to the Chinese Gender Chart for choosing the sex of their babies. And thousands have been blessed with the boy or girl they hoped for. In fact, the properly applied Chinese Gender Chart gives couples at least a 75% chance of having a child of the desired sex.

Canadian Mother Gets Marriage Offers to Help Her Stay in Canada

Posted by: cassie  /  Category: News

This is a very interesting story and I hope that more comes of it. Not that I condone people offering to “fool” the system to help her stay in Canada, but it does a heart good to think something good might come out of this. Maybe even a love story from those 5 proposing marriage ;)

Single mom Hong Zhang cried a river of tears yesterday after learning she can’t leave her baby daughter in Canada with Children’s Aid when she is deported to her native China.

Nestle Agrees to Buy Gerber

Posted by: cassie  /  Category: News

This will be an interesting aquisition to follow since Nestle already has their foot in the baby arena. I wonder if they plan to keep most of the Gerber products going, morph them or “kill” them off..

Nestlé, the world’s largest food company, said today that it had agreed to buy Gerber, the baby food company, for $5.5 billion.

Gerber, famous for its “Gerber Baby” ads, is currently owned by Novartis of Switzerland, which has been selling noncore businesses in recent years to focus on health care.

The deal had been widely anticipated since late last year, when Nestlé purchased Novartis Medical Nutrition for $2.5 billion, and it fits with a strategy at Nestlé to focus on products that fit in a health-and-wellness platform.

Nestlé already has a huge infant nutrition business in Europe, Asia and Latin America. But in the United States, the $900 million-a-year baby food business is dominated by Gerber, which controls 81 percent of the market, said John M. McMillin, an analyst for Prudential Equity Group.

“The acquisition of Gerber is the perfect complementary fit,” said Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, the chief executive of Nestlé. “It not only gives Nestlé the leadership position in baby food, but it also constitutes a decisive step to establish Nestlé Nutrition as the undisputed global leader in the nutrition field.”

What Next? Creating Babies Without Men…

Posted by: cassie  /  Category: Medical, News

Scientists report today on the ability to create sperm from bone marrow cells. Initially performed in men, the technique could potentially be performed in women and lead to a sperm cell made from a woman ’s body. You got it right- that cell could then fertilize an egg leading to the first female-female conception in human history.

Gerber Graduate Puffs

Posted by: cassie  /  Category: Food & Recipes, Gear, Tips, Hints & Other Stuff

I was recently introduced to these amazing little creations. They taste like a variety of fruits and vegetables and dissolve in the baby’s mouth so if they don’t have teeth it isn’t a problem. They are officially called Gerber Graduates Finger Foods and you can find them in any of the supermarkets in the baby isle or any big-box store.

Anthony hasn’t perfected picking them up yet although that is one of the things they are billed at helping him learn dexterity. He gets them in his hand but then isn’t sure what to do so he waves them about for awhile or just opens his hand and dumps them on the floor after he get frustrated and can’t get them in his mouth. O well he is learning!

One word of warning – the sweet potato version does stain clothing so make sure your wee one is wearing a bib! They sell for an average of $2 a container and are great to toss in the diaper bag for snacks on the go.

Moving Like a Freight Train

Posted by: cassie  /  Category: Ramblings

Not only is Anthony cruising back and forth in his walker to the detriment of toes, cats and dogs he is now moving with warp speed whenever you put him down. Crawling isn’t good enough for him apparently so he rolls to his desired spot or scoots backwards! Today he even came up on his knees and used me as a pulling up post to stand up. Trouble is ahead of us folks!

Any hints, tips or wisdom from parents that have been there is appreciated. I’ve already gotten the sliding outlet covers and moved the cleaners from underneath the sink. I also purchased the toilet clamp but haven’t installed it yet.

A Book a Day

Posted by: cassie  /  Category: Tips, Hints & Other Stuff

Books should be an everyday part of your baby’s life (especially since the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends daily read-aloud sessions). Right now, pictures with bright colors and sharp contrast will grab her attention; soon enough, the words will start to sink in. Storybook, magazine, newspaper — at this point, it’s the fact that you’re reading rather than what you read that matters most.
