Paternity Questions Answered

Posted by cassie on Monday, 31 March, 2008 @ 7:40 pm

“Who’s Your Baby’s Daddy?” come up in conversation at all, or if you are just wondering if you REALLY are the daddy check out this at-home test kit that is now available. For roughly $200-$400 you can prove (or disprove) the relationship. The kits are available at Rite Aid for $30.

Participation of the child and father is required of course since you need to swab their mouths, with the mother being optional but highly recommended.

“…The paternity kits have taken their place on store shelves next to other diagnostic tests that don’t rely on DNA, including those for pregnancy, HIV and blood sugar, said Michael S. Watson, executive director of the American College of Medical Genetics.

Unlike genetic tests for health conditions, tests that use DNA to determine paternity are fairly simple to provide and fairly easy to interpret, said Watson. They’re subject to limited oversight, however, with no review required by the Food and Drug Administration and no certification required under the federal Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments, or CLIA.

The Identigene kit includes swabs for collecting cell samples from the inside of the cheeks of the child and the alleged father. Collection of the mother’s cells is optional, but strongly recommended to strengthen the results. The swabs are packaged and mailed to the Sorenson laboratory in Salt Lake City where they’re analyzed…

….Total cost is about $150, including the price of the kit and a $119 laboratory processing fee. For another $200, users can purchase validated tests that meet legal requirements for determining paternity, Fogg said.” Read the rest of the story here.

I can see how this could potentially complicate matters for some people since they could have a “surprise” child show-up or suddenly learn the kid they thought was their’s, isn’t. But overall I think it is a good idea. What do you think?

Email Notification of Sexual Offenders in Florida

Posted by cassie on Sunday, 30 March, 2008 @ 7:17 pm

This site by the FDLE was recently featured in the newspaper and will send you email updates of sexual predators and offenders in your area. My girlfriend sent it to me (thanks Jody!) and I, in turn, am sharing it with you.

I signed up for it and found out there is one located in the back portion of my neighborhood so needless to say I won’t be strolling in that direction anymore! It’s very simple although it does seem somewhat intimidating at first. I entered in my address and told it to give me info on a two mile radius since I doubt I’ll be walking further than that for the foreseeable future.

They also feature pictures of people that they are looking for  so be sure to check it out often.

6 Diaper Bags Found With High Lead Levels

Posted by cassie on Wednesday, 26 March, 2008 @ 7:40 pm

I’m still not understanding how lead got into diaper bags but then again I’m still trying to figure out how it gets into toys and why we aren’t doing anything about it other than reporting. Wake up America and start purchasing American-made or at least from countries that are more trustworthy.

The bags containing the high levels of lead were purchased at Kmart, WalMart and Babies R Us.

“…Three diaper bags with high lead levels in the changing pad were from Kmart, including a Disney Baby “Winnie the Pooh” bag, a Baby Got Bag leopard print bag, and a “Baby Necessities” brand bag. A fourth with lead in the changing pad was a “George” store-brand bag from WalMart. A “Red” brand bag from Mimi Maternity and a Carter’s “Out ‘N About” bag from Babies R Us had high lead levels in other parts of the bag.”

Recalled: Magtastik and Magnetix Jr. Magnetic Toys

Mon, Mar 17, 2008 (BabyCenter News) — Mega Brands has announced a recall of about 1.1 million Magtastik and Magnetix Jr. preschool magnetic toys in cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The company also recalled 1.3 million magnetic toy action figures today.

Small magnets inside the toys can detach and be swallowed or breathed in by young children. If multiple magnets are swallowed, the magnets may attract one another inside the body and cause intestinal tears or blockages, which can be fatal. Mega brands has received 19 reports of magnets detaching, including one report of an 18-month-old who chewed on, but did not swallow, one of the magnets.

The Magtastik and Magnetix Jr. toys include small, flexible animals, vehicles, and building sets embedded with magnets that allow the child to connect these parts to large, colored metal balls. The model number is printed on the front of the product’s packaging. See the chart below for more details

Recaro Car Seat Recall

Posted by cassie on Tuesday, 4 March, 2008 @ 8:49 pm

Recaro announced on Monday, Feb 25, 2008, a recall of its Como and Signo car seats manufactured before December 18, 2007, due to a safety defect that can occur with installation. The car seat harness can detach from the harness connector when a child is placed in or removed from the car seat. This defect means that the child may not be properly strapped into the car seat and could become seriously injured in the case of a vehicle crash.

Recaro is sending a safety repair kit to customers who purchased the recalled car seats. The kit contains two rubber caps and an instruction sheet. Teenage Birth Control

Posted by cassie on Sunday, 24 February, 2008 @ 9:31 pm

If this post doesn’t inspire fear, awe and well… a desire to ensure your teenager doesn’t have sex (or at least unprotected sex) nothing will!

A 16-year-old Argentinian girl just gave birth to triplet girls - a whopping year after giving birth to… triplet girls! A year before that, she had her first baby, a boy, at 14 years old. 14!! Where are this girl’s parents??? She is now a 16-year-old mother of SEVEN!

BBC News reports that the girl’s family receives help from the provincial authorities since giving birth to the first trio, and her mother plans to hit them up again. Maybe her Mom should be looking into birth control since it doesn’t seem the teen anyone in the family is aware of it.

We would love to show that family’s home movies to every teenager in our vicinity! That’s sure to make them think long and hard before having sex (or at least I can hope…I remember the attitude of “it can’t happen to me”). Seven kids under 2 is traumatizing for even the strongest of mothers.

Maybe she can get her own show like the Jon & Kate + 8 on TLC instead of applying for more “help” from the authorities and sponging off her mom, who cleans houses to keep a roof of her and her rapidly expanding families’ heads. Only help I would give this girl is a video on how to keep herself out of the sack. The article doesn’t state if all the kids are from the same father or not but it would be interesting to know.
