Use for Old Crayons

Posted by: cassie  /  Category: Arts & Crafts for Toddlers, Tips, Hints & Other Stuff

crayonsI remember making a crayon candle years ago with my Dad and brother from Christmas. We had a great time breaking up our really old broken candles and melting the wax, etc. But now I’ve found something else that beats the crayon candles hands down! In our FL heat and summer sun this will take about 2.2 seconds to accomplish. I think it’ll take longer to find a neato pan to put it in. Thanks Rockin’ Granola for this awesome blog post!

When my Gram R passed away I inherited a large supply of madeleine tins, chocolate molds, pastry trays, and varioius mini bundt pans. Some of them are in terrific shape and get used for their intended purposes. Some of them are a bit rusty and bent and no longer suitable for food use, so those have become crayon molds for the kiddos. If you don’t have a grandmother who collected candy and baking supplies, I highly suggest the local thrift store for your crayon mold needs – I see interesting pans and trays at ours all the time. I give our trays a little spray with some baking spray (Pam) first so they are a bit easier to get the crayons out (sticking the trays in the freezer helps with this, too). If it isn’t hot enough to melt your crayons outside on the sidewalk, stick the tray in a low oven for a little while (keep a careful eye on them) or put a towel down on the seat of the car to catch any spills and make your crayons in the car (an idea inspired by several mishaps of unintentional crayon making LOL)

North Port’s Bunny Breakfast & Egg-normous Egg Hunt

Posted by: cassie  /  Category: Ramblings, Things to Do

Nick’s sister is in charge of the Park & Recreation activities in North Port and for the past couple of year’s she has had a Easter Egg hunt for the kids. Last year I went down and took my niece and nephew and had a blast so we just HAD to take Anthony this year. And it being put on by family doesn’t hurt either! Nothing like showing you appreciate the work they do ;)

This year she had it held the George Mullen Center and it went even better than last year! There was a breakfast this time also that you could pay $2 a person and eat with the bunny. How cool is that! She had the stage all set up so you could take pictures with the Easter bunny as well. Which didn’t go off to well with Anthony. He wasn’t too certain about this big white guy holding him while mommy jumped around like an idiot trying to get him to smile.

After the breakfast there were 3 seperate hunts based on age groups set up on the football field. She roped them off and each group went by themselves. Mr. Bunny just had to hop on in there and wave his hand for the band of merry kiddies to rush in and grab some plastic easter eggs. There were prizes you could claim if you get a ticket and of course, candy and other trinkets.

Jasmine (my niece) did great this year! Last year she was too scared and just stood there when we tried to get her to go in and finally picked up an egg or two then freaked out and ran for her mom. Of course it didn’t help that her mom was yelling at her to get the eggs then promptly got mad when Jasmine got skittish. So I guess a yr. does make a difference because this time she stood there, ran in for a few, walked around a bit then grabbed some more and finally sat and chatted with a friend. But she felt good about the amount of eggs she got so that was all that counted.

If you want to contact them about next year’s this is the number listed on the flier – 941-426-8331 or visit the North Port City website @ http://www.cityofnorthport.com/

I got some good pictures of everyone so I’ll post them in a bit. Anthony calls……

Barely Blemished Sale

Posted by: cassie  /  Category: Gear, Things to Do

If you live in Bradenton/Sarasota the Jr League annual sale is this weekend. They have new and barely used clothing, household items, kids’ stuff, etc. I go every year with my mom and sister-in-law and always score a ton of stuff. If you go Saturday afternoon they discount the stuff down to around $1-2 a bag, that way they still make some money before the “left overs” go to Goodwill. The best part with deals like that is you wind up only paying a couple cents for each item of clothing so if you get it home and hate it it’s no big deal.

This year I’m going to check out the baby section for sure!
