Eneloop Rechargable Batteries

Posted by cassie on Tuesday, 19 August, 2008 @ 2:25 pm

rechargable-batteriesI’ve been on a quest recently to find rechargable batteries. Not only does it kill me to always be buying the little buggers for almost every toy we own. Ya know the $$ but also the environmental impact! We do not have a place locally to recycle regular batteries (if they are even recyclable….not sure on that one.) so they wind up getting tossed in the trash. I’ve recently come across batteries made by Sanyo that are AA and AAA, with adapters for the C and Ds! While most of our toys require AA batteries, Vincent’s swings use C and D batteries so why not get re-chargable ones. Check out their website for more info or go directly to Amazon.com! The rave reviews on Amazon’s site is the final icing on the cake for me. ;) I’ll post a review on them after I receive them.

Send Expired Coupons to Our Troops

Posted by cassie on Monday, 18 August, 2008 @ 8:08 pm

Are you a coupon clipper? Do you just toss coupons in the recycling bin? Ever wonder what to do with the ones you don’t use or want? I have a perfect answer for you!

Our troops and their families can use expired coupons for up to 6 months AFTER (yes after) they’ve expired! What a great way to help them out with saving money and keep the paper out of our landfill. For the price of a little time and a couple of $$ you can send coupons overseas and make a world of difference for people that are making a difference for you! You can even encourage a few friends or family members to join in and split the cost of shipping.

Please separate the coupons into two piles “Food” and “Non-Food” and put theminto a labeled baggie. And, whenever possible, please send coupons that are not more than 2 months expired to allow the time for the coupons to be mailed, received and sorted, distributed, and still give the families plenty of time to actually use them.

The two overseas bases that I will be sending my cpns to are: Menwith Hill in the U.K. and Ansbach in Germany.

Birthday Party Favor Bags

Posted by cassie on Thursday, 14 August, 2008 @ 1:15 pm

Ok so I had to do birthday favor bags for Anthony’s 2nd birthday. But only because my girlfriend reminded me. Duh! Thanks Jody!!

I took advantage of the sales they’ve had recently and spent about $5 per “bag”. Yes, that is a steep price but since I only had to make 4 of them (one being Anthony’s) I was ok with doing it. So now you are dying to know what is in them aren’t you??

Well…..first I didn’t use a bag. Why be wasteful, right? Instead I bought pencil cases at Target a couple of weeks ago - blue for the boys and pink for the girls. I then wrote their name on the top of the box so they feel super special. My mom had the brilliant idea of using a sharpie instead of painting it on, which was my first thought. Thanks mom! Thank god for other people and their brains ;)

So now the filler:

  • a box of Crayola crayons for 22 cents
  • a box of primary colored modeling clay for $1
  • 2-3 sheets of stickers ($1 per package but some packages had 2 in there and were broken up)
  • a box of Crayola colored pencils for 88 cents
  • a package of Crayola model magic (bought a package of 6 for 6.99 and had 2 left over for Ant to play with)

If Anthony is any judge than the other kids will love it! And for the icing on the cake, they’ll get to take a balloon home too.

Toy Box at Nana & Papa’s

Posted by cassie on Wednesday, 6 August, 2008 @ 10:22 pm

We got my in-laws frequently and I’ve been battling an up-hill battle to leave some toys there for Anthony to play with when we go. I’ve succeeded in leaving behind a horsey that neighs when your press his ear (bought by them so they couldn’t refuse) and a teeny tiny bag of match box cars. It doesn’t entertain him for terribly long so I always wind up bringing toys along with me as well.

Well…now that Vince is here and we’re back to bringing everything and the kitchen sink along with us, (we bring a bouncy chair for him and a portable booster for Ant on top of everything else) I decided that carting toys along too was the last straw.

I hit the Target 75% off summer clearance sale last weekend and bought a bunch of different toys and an under the bed storage box. I filled it up with crayons, coloring books, various toys - both inside and outside ones and even an aquadoodle. We brought it over to his parents house and explained that it was toys for there and they could store it under the bed in the guest room and it would be good for when all the younger grandkids come over. You could tell they weren’t overly excited about it but they couldn’t resist since we covered all the bases. And now, there is one less thing for us to cart over there when we go :) Thank god.

Britax Car Seats 15% Off

Posted by cassie on Tuesday, 24 June, 2008 @ 9:30 pm

This is almost like a pre-fall sale, but great if you need to buy a seat now. I can’t say for sure what the prices will be but based on what I’ve read you can expect to pay ~ $20 more for a seat at this time than what you will in the fall sale. Again, this is based on conjuncture and what the prices were during the spring sale, which I unfortunately missed.

* I’m still in the process of compiling my list, so I’ll add the websites & prices tomorrow.

And, of course, this couldn’t come at a better time for me since I need to get a new seat for one of the boys. I’m still on the fence if I should upgrade Anthony to a Marathon and give the Roundabout to Vince or if I should just buy another Roundabout. I guess part of my decision will be based on price :D Based on FL law, I could go either way with using a booster seat when the time comes. HOWEVER (hold your horses before you blow a gasket) based on my personal beliefs - they will be in boosters!

According to Florida`s car seat law (http://www.dot.state.fl.us/safety/HighwaySafetyGrantProgram):

  • All children 5 years of age or younger must be properly restrained no matter where they are sitting in the vehicle.
  • Children through age 3 must be secured in a separate carrier or a vehicle manufacturer’s integrated child safety seat.
  • For children aged 4 through 5 years, a separate carrier, an integrated child safety seat, or a safety belt may be used.

Therefore, under the Florida car seat law, children over 3 years old may ride in a vehicle using a standard adult safety belt. (ACK!) The problem with this (according to advocates) is that most children under 80 pounds are too small for an adult seat belt. Adult seat belts can actually be dangerous to children because the belt cuts directly across their neck instead of snug across the center of their shoulder. This can lead to serious injury or even death in the event of an accident.

So what`s a parent to do? Car seat safety advocates recommend one of the following guidelines:

  • The National Highway Safety Administration (NHSA) recommends that children over 40 pounds use a belt-positioning booster seat until they are 8 years old, unless they are 4`9″ or taller.
  • The American Academy of Pediatricians goes a bit further and advocates for booster seat use until the child reaches 4`9″ in height and is between 8 and 12 years of age.

The CareGivers Marketplace

Posted by cassie on Monday, 23 June, 2008 @ 8:26 pm

Recently I came across a website that helps caregivers receive money back on certain products - if they keep their receipts and turn them in by a certain date. Huggies, Pullups and Overnights are on there so I was thinking “score”! Unfortunately the only approved retail location in my area is Kmart and they are no where near my normal stomping ground :( I’ll keep checking back to see if they add any more stores in my area.

Be sure to check out the site and see if it works for you!

Natural Cleaning Tips

Posted by cassie on Monday, 16 June, 2008 @ 7:52 am

In honor of all the new stains I will be removing and a second addition to the household, which makes me wnt to clean greener than ever, here are some great, cheap alternatives to harsh chemicals.

To Remove Stains

It’s easy to go chemical-free when removing laundry stains. Many natural household items work better than commercial stain removers.

Baking soda – Make a paste out of baking soda and water and apply it to the stain. Allow to set for about an hour then wash as usual.

Hydrogen peroxide – Mix equal parts of hydrogen peroxide and water and keep in a spray or squeeze bottle. Squirt the solution on blood stains and other laundry problems before laundering.

Vinegar – Distilled white vinegar works well on blood stains, grass stains, and those pesky sweat stains on the underarms of t-shirts. Pour a little bit of vinegar directly onto the stain and allow to set for a few minutes before laundering.

Toothpaste – Using an old toothbrush, rub whitening toothpaste onto a grass stain. Let it set for several hours and then launder.

Soda water – If you can catch a stain right after it happens, get some club soda onto it immediately. If possible, remove the item of clothing and get more soda water on it and then launder.

To Bleach Out a Stain

Lemon juice acts as a natural bleaching agent. Dab a spot of lemon juice on white clothing or linens and set them out in the sun to dry. Don’t use lemon juice on colors.

To Brighten Whites

Lemon juice - Make your white linens bright by adding ¼ cup lemon juice to your warm-water wash cycle.

The sun – After using lemon juice in your wash cycle, hang linens out to dry on a sunny day. The sun will heighten the brightening effect.

To Brighten Colors

Vinegar – Pour a cup of white vinegar into the wash cycle to make your colors bright. Don’t ever mix vinegar with bleach, as the fumes can be dangerous.

To Soften Clothing

If you want a light fabric softener without the residue and odor of dryer sheets, try a natural alternative.

Vinegar – Add 1 tablespoon of white distilled vinegar to the rinse cycle as a natural fabric softener.

Baking soda – Pour in ¼ cup baking soda to the wash cycle to soften clothing and linens.

To Remove Mold Smell Towels

It’s tough to get mold stains out of towels and swim suits that have been not properly dried. Sometimes it’s not the stain, but the moldy smell that you have to deal with.

Soak the towel in a solution of white vinegar and water for about 30 minutes, then launder in hot water. Make a weaker vinegar solution for a smelly swimsuit (1/2 cup white vinegar to 1 gallon water) and put it in to soak for no more than 1 minute. Rinse in cold water, launder on delicate cycle, and line dry.

To Remove Bad Odors

Clothing kept in a drawer too long can develop a faint but unpleasant smell. Before you resort to scented detergents, try a simpler solution.

Herbs - Keep sachets of dried herbs in your drawers. Dried mint leaves, rosemary, and lavender can be wrapped up in a square of cheesecloth for an easy homemade sachet.

Good Smelling “Stuff” - If you get magazines with perfume inserts, remove them, open them up, and keep them in your drawers for a few days until the smell dissipates. You can also store your scented candles in your clothes drawers.

Air – It doesn’t get any simpler than this. Airing out your closets and drawers on a breezy, clear day can do more to freshen your laundry than anything.

To Cut Back on Dry Cleaning

Try spot cleaning the item, fluffing it up in the dryer on a cool-air cycle, and reshaping it. Many dry-clean-only items don’t need to be cleaned after every wearing.

Cheap Entertainment

Posted by cassie on Thursday, 5 June, 2008 @ 6:44 pm

With Vince due any day now - 38 weeks and counting!! - I’ve been trying to pick up little things here and there to entertain Anthony when the time comes. Not only when Granny is watching him when Daddy and I are at the hospital but the all important week or two after we come home and Mommy needs to rest.

Here’s what I’ve got so far - PLEASE feel free to chime in with other ideas:

  • Books and activity books from Goodwill
  • Movies from half.com and GameStop. Titles include: various Winnie the Pooh, Tigger the Movie, Brother Bear, and Charlotte’s Web. I also have some Sesame Street movies he hasn’t watched yet (OT: But GameStop has Buy 2, Get 3 Free on movies right now. Good deal if you ask me)
  • New-to-him (Goodwill purchase) train set and track
  • Put-it-together wooden airplane from Aunt Kat at xmas

Comment below - What other forms of entertainment do you think will make him happy for awhile? Keep in mind we live in FL and it’s already in the low 90s so outside activities are rather limited.

Uses for Cupcake Liners

Posted by cassie on Wednesday, 4 June, 2008 @ 8:40 pm

If this woman is not ingenious I don’t know who is! Check out this great post from Thrifty Florida Mama on uses for a cupcake liner. My favorites are below and I’ll put those into practice for Anthony’s second birthday party, especially the ice cream :P

1. I like to bake brownies in cupcake liners. Before I started doing this we ended up with brownie crumbs everywhere in our house. These smushed dark blobs are not fun to get out of carpet! So I started baking my brownies in the liners. We have almost zero brownie mess now and the bonus for us is that there are no edge pieces. I know there are many people who only want the edge pieces, but not us. We are inside pieces people. It is nice to send brownies to classroom parties in these liners too because they are easier to hand out to kids.

2. I use cupcake liners to serve ice cream at my kids’ birthday parties. I just scoop out the ice cream a couple of hours before the party, stick them on a cookie sheet and put back into the freezer. When it is cake and ice cream time I pull out the tray and put the liner full of ice cream on the kids’ plates. This means that the melting ice cream doesn’t touch the cake on the plate either; a cardinal sin for some kids!

Great Mommy Bargain Sites

Posted by cassie on Friday, 30 May, 2008 @ 8:13 pm

So I’ve recently found some great mommy bargain sites that are basically a deal-of-the-day sort of thing. I can’t resist checking them out several times a day because some of them do update their inventory with something new when the recent “it” item gets sold out. Great for gift ideas for parents and young children!

MamaBargains.com - they update their site several times a day and have a well-rounded selection of items. So far in the past two days I’ve seen Timi & Leslie diaper back packs, shoes and now a baby carrier sling. I ordered 2 backpacks from them so I’ll let you know how it goes.

Update: So far they have exceeded my expectations! They sent me a prompt email confirmation for my order and my order has already shipped as of today via UPS.

Babysteals.com - they update once a day and when the item is sold, it’s sold.

Tottlers.com - I’m unsure how often they update their site. They currently have the same deal up there today as they did yesterday.

Overall if you are a bargain shopper and interested in deals, bookmark the sites and check them out once a day or once a week. Either way you never know what you’ll be able to find and get for yourself or someone else!
