Enough

Posted by cassie on Sunday, 30 March, 2008 @ 7:23 pm

hugsMy SIL sent this to me today and although it is an email that may eventually reach your mailbox too I wanted to share it with you. It’s a nice reminder to enjoy everyday life! In fact, it would make a wonderful plaque or poem to give to that special someone with pictures of the two of you featured. Maybe use pictures of the kids with mom for Mother’s Day or dad for Father’s Day…
Recently I overheard a mother and daughter in their last moments together at the airport. They had announced the departure.

Standing near the security gate, they hugged and the mother said, “I love you, and I wish you enough.”

The daughter replied, “Mom, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Mom.”

They kissed and the daughter left. The mother walked over to the window where I was seated. Standing there I could see she wanted and needed to cry. I tried not to intrude on her privacy, but she welcomed me in by asking, “Did you ever say good-bye to someone knowing it would be forever?”

“Yes, I have,” I replied. “Forgive me for asking, but why is this a forever good-bye?”.

“I am old, and she lives so far away. I have challenges ahead and the reality is - the next trip back will be for my funeral,” she said.

“When you were saying good-bye, I heard you say, ‘I wish you enough.’ May I ask what that means?”

She began to smile. “That’s a wish that has been handed down from other generations. My parents used to say it to everyone.” She paused a moment and looked up as if trying to remember it in detail, and she smiled even more. “When we said, ‘I wish you enough,’ we were wanting the other person to have a life filled with just enough good things to sustain them.” Then turning toward me, she shared the following as if she were reciting it from memory.

I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright no matter how gray the day may appear.

I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun even more.

I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive and everlasting.

I wish you enough pain so that even the smallest of joys in life may appear bigger.

I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.

I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.

I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good-bye.

She then began to cry and walked away.

They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them; but then an entire life to forget them.

Email Notification of Sexual Offenders in Florida

Posted by cassie on Sunday, 30 March, 2008 @ 7:17 pm

This site by the FDLE was recently featured in the newspaper and will send you email updates of sexual predators and offenders in your area. My girlfriend sent it to me (thanks Jody!) and I, in turn, am sharing it with you.

I signed up for it and found out there is one located in the back portion of my neighborhood so needless to say I won’t be strolling in that direction anymore! It’s very simple although it does seem somewhat intimidating at first. I entered in my address and told it to give me info on a two mile radius since I doubt I’ll be walking further than that for the foreseeable future.

They also feature pictures of people that they are looking for  so be sure to check it out often.

Upromise - Saving for College

Posted by cassie on Thursday, 27 March, 2008 @ 8:29 pm

I joined Upromise in 2002 to help towards saving for college for my niece and nephew. Along the way I’ve joined the support-your-school program and, of course, added Anthony. I can say honestly I’m not the best at using it because I forget to go through their shopping links on their site but I have saved a decent amount of $$ for the kids.

It is a passive way of savings, after you enter in your grocery savings cards and credit cards. It can even be hooked up to a 529 Savings plan (which I still haven’t wrapped my head around how those work..) and you can encourage your friends and family to add their grocery savings cards, etc on to your account as well. Certainly nothing to lose I’ve found so far, so check it out for yourself! Bonus they are giving you $10 if you sign up for an account before April 30th.

“Upromise is a one-stop college service provider that helps families earn, save and pay for higher education. With Upromise, families can automatically save money for college while making everyday purchases at grocery and drug stores, gas stations, restaurants, retail stores and online shopping sites. Upromise’s partners include Citi, ExxonMobil Corporation, McDonald’s, JCPenney.com, LandsEnd.com, Sears.com, and hundreds of others!”

Posted by cassie on Monday, 24 March, 2008 @ 7:44 pm

If you haven’t started reading to your kids yet now is a great time do so! D.E.A.R. is sending out an information kit on how to help you get started. We’ve been reading to Anthony since we brought him home but new pointers never hurt so I ordered the kit.

What is National D.E.A.R. Day?
D.E.A.R. stands for Drop Everything and Read. National D.E.A.R. Day is a special reading celebration to remind and encourage families to make reading together on a daily basis a family priority. ”

To learn more about this wonderful program or to request your free kit, visit their website.

A great tip - take pictures on each of his/her monthly “birthdays” to see what I am seeing with your own kids! Just make sure you label your pictures for your archives.

Easter Basket Ideas

Posted by cassie on Friday, 14 March, 2008 @ 8:55 am

I have been contemplating what to fill Anthony’s Easter basket up with this year. Last year we didn’t get him anything since there was no point and this year is hardly any better. You see, he is 18 months old - what does he really need out of life? Love and acceptance? Some cuddling? I don’t think I can fill a basket with that stuff. If I could I would be the richest gal around since it would fly off the shelves.

In an effort to not add to the overwhelming amount of stuff he already owns I’ve been on a hunt to only buy stuff I know he’ll love or strongly suspect he’ll love once he sees it. I’ll also be ridding my house of some of his unloved items for the new ones to replace. A constant battle in a parent’s world I’m noticing.

Here are some of my suggestions:

  • Books, especially the small board books
  • Play-doh (recipe here)
  • Pom-pom balloon balls
  • Bubbles and different bubble wands
  • Bubble lawnmower (ok so it’s a little big for a basket but I forgot to give it to him for Valentine’s Day and his birthday is ages away)
  • Crayons or markers
  • Slinky
  • Fruit snacks, fruit and/or candy
